Coming Out at Work: Our Stories

[MUSIC PLAYING. ]
ANDRE: What motivated me to come out? I think not being true to myself was not an option.
[TEXT] We asked our Associates about their “coming out” experience at work…
ANDRE: I actually came out in my interview. When I was asked where I see myself in the future-- in the near future, five years from now, and that's an integral part of who I am because I really, really want to be a father. And being a gay man, I do have to jump through a couple additional hoops to accomplish that.
CARMELA: I came out at work because I wanted to be able to share with, not only my coworkers, but even with my clients, the love that I have with my partner, my wife. It should not impact and will not impact the work and-- the performance of work that I provide.
JAMES: I had friends who worked in ADP already who were also members of the LGBTQ community who could really talk to my team and the people that I'd be working closely with and kind of filled them in on what type of person I was. So going into a new company was really easy, and that conversation was really easy.
MARIANA: How seriously ADP takes the zero-tolerance policy for any type of discrimination in the work environment. This, for sure, encouraged me to slowly start including my wife's name into conversations with my team in a natural way until I came out completely to everyone.
TONDREA: I'm not sure I technically had a coming out experience here at ADP, and the reason being is that I had already been out for several years-- both personally and professionally-- before I came to ADP. But I will say this, that as soon as I walked into the doors of ADP, I could tell almost immediately that I could be authentically me and that this place was a place that celebrated diverse points of view.
LACEY: It was after I had all of the support and love from the members of the community within ADP, my fellow members of ADP Pride, they really gave me the strength that I needed to come out in my personal life. So really, if you think about it, I came out to my ADP family before I came out to folks in my personal life. So I think that's a testament to the culture that we have at ADP.
LEONARDO: And when I was talking with my manager, she asked me, what would be something in the company that would make a big difference for me to take a decision to work for a company? And I said that diversity would be very important, because I'm gay. And since then, it was not necessary to start any other conversation. Also, with my teammates. So it was very natural, my coming out experience.

ADP Client Service and Implementation - Diversity Equity and Inclusion

[MUSIC PLAYING]
[LOGO: ADP, Always Designing for People]
RABEYA: My parents are from Bangladesh, and I am first generation here.
JEN: So personally my mom was an immigrant from Germany.
NEWSY: I've never felt like I've had to hide who I am, I'm very proud of being born in the Dominican Republic.
DEREK: There's definitely diversity, equity, and inclusion at ADP. I am able to be myself, so when I come into work, I feel comfortable. I don't have to put on an act and then change that once I leave.
JADA: I feel like I can 100% be who I am. I feel like I'm accepted 100% completely and totally. When I walk through those doors, I know that they're going to see me for who I am.
RABEYA: My managers, my senior leaders are always talking about how we can do more to help everyone feel included. I remember once it was at the end of Ramadan we have a holiday Eid, and I took the day off for Eid, and then the next day when I came in my coworkers had the whole spread of different food, and they had little signs that said Eid Mubarak. Knowing that my coworkers care about my background and my religion feels like home, it feels like family.
NEWSY: Diversity, equity, and inclusion at ADP is something that's taken very seriously. It's not just something that we do to check a box. I was selected to be part of a development program that lasted a full year, and this development program was specifically for multicultural associates. So, ADP wanted to make sure that we had the tools, and the mentorship, and sponsorship, and training needed, in order to be prepared to become people leaders. That in itself just shows me the dedication that ADP has to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
JEN: ADP really does focus on making sure that no one person or group feels undervalued or underrepresented in any way, and they want you to feel a sense of belonging. Different cultures, experiences, mindsets, even self-identifiers are welcomed, they're celebrated, but they're also respected.

ADP's Inclusion Summit 2021: Different Experiences, Stronger Together

[TEXT] LOGO: ADP, Always Designing for People. Inclusion Summit 2021: Different Experiences, Stronger Together.
[ABBY WAMBACH]: Modern leadership is exhausting. It is not easy. It is not for somebody who can't handle understanding the nuances of people. Understanding what happened to certain people is going to affect them in their daily lives.
[TEXT] This is what happens when you gather leading activists, HR and inclusion leaders, business owners, economists and strategists to discuss inclusion at work.
[BOB LOCKETT]: The world of work continues to evolve against the backdrop of a global pandemic and renewed social unrest, all magnifying inequalities that have existed for generations. Now, business leaders are rightfully placing greater focus on improving diversity, equity, and inclusion. With that goal in mind, we want to bring together thought leaders and experts to talk through today's challenges and reframe this moment as an opportunity to do better and to enable people to be their best selves at work and beyond.
[SOLEDAD OBRIEN]: I love these conversations when they're serious and thoughtful and are undergirded by data in the DE&I space, right? Because often it's hard to find data. It's very emotional for people. And I really am interested in figuring out how do we think about data around inclusion.
[NELA RICHARDSON]: Everything's changing. There's digital transformation. There's this remote versus virtual. How are we going to reopen and welcome immigration again, immigration that's been shut down by the pandemic? What is the new workplace going to be? Well, it's a time to re-imagine what that is and to show leadership. And hopefully that leadership will point to what will drive real growth in the country, which is inclusion.
[Jessica Tuman] The first thing that we did at Voya when we started our inclusion journey about five or six years ago was creating an environment where people felt that they could trust the organization to self-identify, to reveal their disability because there is so much reticence.
[MARCUS BUCKINGHAM]: Where we stand today, I think, is with a deeper understanding of what are the psychological ingredients of feeling connected at work and how connection feeds into the I of DE&I. We do have some way of understanding those ingredients. And then more importantly, we've got some way to reliably measure them. So that as we move forward, we will be able to help. And this is the commitment of ADPRI. This is our commitment to do great to good in the world.
[STEVE CANNON]: We need to take care of our people, and we are living now in a society where mental health really matters, right? Depression, anxiety are at pandemic levels, and if we don't address those things, it's going to have an impact on our organization. Period.
[ABBY WAMBACH]: Leadership truly is always ever changing. It's not static. It's always growing because our culture is always changing, right?
[GLENNON DOYLE]: And I think that real leadership in this moment has to get a lot more comfortable with discomfort, with chaos. The challenge of modern leadership, of what is next is how do we create these communities where people feel both held by the group and free to express themselves fully?

Aisha Thomas-Petit, ADP's Chief Diversity, Inclusion & Corporate Social Responsibility Officer

[MUSIC PLAYING]
[LOGO: ADP, Always Designing for People]
[TEXT: Aisha Thomas-Petit, Chief Diversity, Inclusion, and Corporate Social Responsibility Officer]
Hi, I'm Aisha Thomas-Petit. I am the Chief Diversity, Inclusion, and Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, and I've been with ADP for six years.
What attracted me to ADP when I was considering coming out of financial services was really an organization that was focused on transformation and technology. And so I never expected to sit here before you as the Chief Diversity, Inclusion, and CSR Officer. It wasn't even a thought in my mind.
I came to ADP with full intention of making a positive impact on the organization, bringing with me all of the skills, knowledge, competencies that I had developed in financial services. But I did not put a career roadmap together. I was really just, if I could use the word "chasing," I was chasing experiences. I was chasing an opportunity to learn about an industry that I knew very little about.
This is an organization where people, no matter what business unit or function you represent, everyone wants this amazing company to be successful. And whether you're playing a product role, working on our next-gen products, whether you are in our sales function and making sure that we're tapping into every single type of client, whether you're an HR business partner or working in our finance organization, everyone has, at the core, the desire to serve our clients and the desire to do what it takes to ensure that this company stays around for another 70 years.
Every day for me is a great day when I have an opportunity to sit with an associate, to sit with a leader one-to-one and learn something, something that will serve to benefit the diversity and inclusion and CSR work that I have strategically planned for and that the team is strategically planning for and executing against. So those are great days for me.

The goal of the ASIA BRG is multifold, and one is to promote Asian awareness within ADP. One is to promote community support and development. And then networking and career development for ADP associates.

[SPEECH: KIM]
So Inspire is all about encouraging associates to bring their strengths and their passions to work every day. And we're looking to champion innovative thinking across the company, and help unleash individual associates' unique experiences and passions and strengths to further their personal and professional development, as well as drive ADP success.

[SPEECH: JOE]
Generations is a business resource group created here in ADP. And what Generations does, it brings people together. And I believe that the beginnings of Generations was for new employees, new associates here at ADP to get them acclimated, give them some insights. A lot of that has to do with there's these mentorships that are built in, there's a lot of networking. Also a talk series to give really new associates and people who have been here for a long time actually, more insights than they would normally have.

[SPEECH: ESLIN]
So iWIN is the International Women's Inclusion Network. Its main focus is really to help merge that aspect of the younger professionals with the more senior professionals and really giving them a clear place to network and grow and develop their skills, in order to grow. I mean, women are a minority leadership inside most corporations. ADP recognizes that value and says, how do we give them avenues to grow. And IWIN's a great place for them to grow and develop.
